Welcome
to our free tool guide, designed
to accompany our book, whose cover you see here. For more details
about this book, refer to
SearchHelpCenter.com.
Consider this guide as a starting
point in your search, intended to get you going in the right
direction — to point you toward the
most important references and/or provide you with sample
websites.
How to get started? Find your desired information
listed alphabetically on the left navigation bar. Then
click on the appropriate links.
What's a search
tool? It's
any mechanism or computer program that helps you locate
information on the Web, such as a search engine, a meta search
engine, a directory of other search tools, or even
individual websites providing search end results and
having their own rich internal search abilities.
What's a search
tool guide? It's a multi-level, categorized list of different types of
search tools. Working from the highest level kind of search tool
guide down, a search tool guide can include links to:
- Websites that specialize in discussing,
categorizing, and advising on search engines or
tools, including other search tool guides: e.g.:
- General search tool directories, and meta or deep web search tools
and directories that categorize more specific search
tools by subject and other: e.g.:
Note that Copernic's lists of specific search
tools in each category are available in our Search Tool Guide,
by clicking on the various category names/descriptions for these
particular search tools. Other meta search tools that classify
and make explicit the search tools they source may in future be
added to our Search Tool Guide.
- Specialized, deep and surface web search engines
and directories, including library gateways, subject-specific
databases, vearch engines: e.g.:
- All-in-one search guides, which allow you to
directly enter your search using any one (but not
more than one at a time) of a categorized list of
more specific search tools: e.g.:
Is our search tool guide the only one presently
around? No, there are others, although each
works in a different way. Ours is a "high-level"
search tool guide, since it references sites that
specialize in discussing, categorizing, and advising
on search engines or tools, including other search
tool guides. In that respect, our guide may make a
bigger attempt than others to cross-reference other
search tool guides. That's because this guide is
here to serve you by providing you with as many
choices as possible beyond our own guide. At the
same time, we hope to benefit by encouraging you to
consider buying our book.
What else may be unique in our search tool guide?
It also categorizes search tools by factors other than
subject or audience, such as by search tool ability,
type (e.g., directory, meta, mainstream), and level
(degree of generality). |
